THE END AS I KNOW IT out in paperback

Hi! It's been a while.

1) PAPERBACK RELEASED

THE END AS I KNOW IT: A NOVEL OF MILLENNIAL ANXIETY is now available in a softcover edition from Anchor Books. It has an excellent new cover design, although I am a bit wistful about losing the raccoon.

Information about the book:

http://www.kshay.com/teaiki/

Here's the paperback on Amazon.com, where you can also buy a Kindle edition of the book (you know... for Kindle):

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0307276724

Please note the absence of Tama Janowitz. For some reason, in the "Buy this book with..." section on Amazon, the hardcover of TEAIKI was always paired with books by Tama Janowitz. I never really understood why. But now... Michael Chabon!

2) BLOGGING AT KSHAY.COM "RESUMES"

That's in quotation marks because, frankly, it never really began in the first place to any significant extent. But I'm now making an effort to update the blog more regularly, so if you're interested, check in from time to time:

http://www.kshay.com/

Or subscribe to the feed:

http://www.kshay.com/index.xml

3) A FINAL DOSE OF PRE-Y2K

You may or may not recall the ON THIS DAY PRE-Y2K section of my site, a retroblog of some of the more interesting pieces of online paranoia from the corresponding date eight years prior. I abandoned it after a few months, but recently put up some more entries from December 1999 and January 2000--which was, after all, sort of a big moment for Y2K-catastrophe true believers. Take a look if you're curious about how people responded to the non-end of the world:

http://www.kshay.com/teaiki/onthisday/

4) COME INVITE ME TO DO SOMETHING INVOLVING ZOMBIES

Yes, social networking has hunted me down. You can find me on Facebook here:

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=818802828

Thanks,
Please join me this Wednesday, when I'll be reading from THE END AS I KNOW IT as part of Makor's Debut Fiction Night. This is my last reading currently scheduled in New York. 2) INTERVIEW ON MOVABLE TYPE WEBSITE

There's a new podcast of an interview with me now available on Six Apart's website. Six Apart is the company behind Movable Type, a blogging and content management software program I've worked with for many years in my non-writing life. They kindly arranged for renowned online radio host Jesse Thorn (THE SOUND OF YOUNG AMERICA) to interview me. We discussed THE END AS I KNOW IT, Y2K, blogging, and Movable Type plugins. You can listen to or download the interview here:

http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/news/2007/02/a_coversation_w.html

3) KGB BAR

Many thanks to all who attended my reading at KGB Bar. The event was recorded, and will be available as a podcast, along with a brief interview. They don't appear to have the previous reading up yet, so it may be a while, but it should eventually appear here:
5) KSHAY.COM: YOUR ONE-STOP SOURCE FOR KSHAY

I want to make sure everyone is aware that my website doesn't only contain the book-related details you already know. I'm blogging there regularly--about THE END AS I KNOW IT and Y2K, of course, but also about such disparate topics as chain letters, Robert Pinsky, and the economic stability of Brazil (well, I'm still working on that one).

In other words, there's often new stuff on the site. Please stop by from time to time, and by all means leave a comment or two if the spirit moves you.

Also, each entry on the blog now has a "Share It" box that lets you easily submit the entry to Digg, del.icio.us, and other user-driven news sites. If you participate in any of these sites and find one of the entries interesting, submit away!

1) THE BOOK IS OUT THERE

So, THE END AS I KNOW IT: A NOVEL OF MILLENNIAL ANXIETY was officially released on December 26. It's been sighted, and even purchased, in several actual bookstores. Furthermore, it can be ordered from Amazon, BN.com, and other web-based purveyors of literature, who will ship it to you without delay. (Barring some sort of unforeseen delay.)

If your favorite local bookstore doesn't have the book on the shelves yet, please ask them politely to get with the program.

2) THIS THURSDAY IN NYC

Please join me this week for my first post-publication reading from THE END AS I KNOW IT:

Thursday, 1/4 @ 7 PM
Barnes & Noble
4 Astor Place
New York, NY
212-420-1322

The event is free and open to all. Spread the word!

3) KSHAY.COM AND OTHER WEB DEVELOPMENTS

I've launched my new site, where you'll find all the latest information about the novel, me, and my previous writing. There's also a blog.

http://www.kshay.com/

If you're interested in the online Y2K subculture the book explores, take a look at "On This Day Pre-Y2K":

http://www.kshay.com/teaiki/onthisday/

Also, THE END AS I KNOW IT now has its own presence on MySpace.

http://www.myspace.com/theendasiknowit

Are you a MySpace user? Then why not befriend my book?

4) SOME REVIEWS ARE IN

A few major newspapers have already reviewed THE END AS I KNOW IT, notably USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. Links to all press coverage I'm currently aware of can be found here:
http://www.kshay.com/teaiki/press.php

5) OTHER UPCOMING APPEARANCES

PLEASE NOTE that the previous mailing listed an incorrect date for the Brookline Booksmith reading. It is in fact Monday, March 12th.

ALSO NOTE that the date listed for the KGB Bar event is incorrect on Doubleday's site. It is in fact February 11, not January 11.

3) BOOK RELEASE AND UPCOMING APPEARANCES

The official release date of THE END AS I KNOW IT: A NOVEL OF MILLENNIAL ANXIETY is 12/26. Whether it will actually start showing up in stores a couple of days before or after that, I don't know. Keep an eye out! (Not to be confused with "You'll put an eye out!")

Here are the official readings and signings scheduled thus far:

Thursday, 1/4 @ 7 PM

More information about each of these events will follow as it approaches, and others will be added.

Meanwhile, next week, on Wednesday, 12/20, I will be appearing in this month's edition of TWO FOR THE SHOW, a comedy/variety show hosted by my friends Maura Madden and Rufus Tureen. This will involve a brief reading from the book and possibly some additional buffoonery. Other funny people will perform as well. The show is at Mo Pitkin's House of Satisfaction in NYC, at 7:30.

http://twofortheweb.com/shows.html

4) ORDERING THE BOOK

I haven't yet been actively encouraging those who are inclined to purchase THE END AS I KNOW IT to pre-order it, partly because of some half-baked notion that the book's "Amazon ranking" will fare better if a bunch of orders come in right around the publication date. My novel THE END AS I KNOW IT is coming out in December. If you're receiving this, it's because I know you, am related to you, or have worked or corresponded with you, and I thought you might be interested in hearing about upcoming readings and other news related to the book and my writing.

I don't plan to send more than one message every couple of weeks. They'll always be plain text (no attachments, HTML, or funny noises), and I'll never share your address with anyone. But if you prefer not to get these updates, simply visit this URL at any time to unsubscribe:
3. ABOUT THE NOVEL

THE END AS I KNOW IT: A NOVEL OF MILLENNIAL ANXIETY will be published by Doubleday on December 26, 2006. Here's a synopsis:

It's 1998. Or, as Randall Knight sees it, Y2K minus two. Randall, a twenty-five-year-old children's singer and puppeteer, has discovered the clock is ticking toward a worldwide technological cataclysm. But he may still be able to save his loved ones--if he can convince them to prepare for the looming catastrophe. That's why he's quit his job, moved into his car, and set out to sound the alarm.

THE END AS I KNOW IT follows Randall on his coast-to-coast Cassandra tour. His itinerary includes the elementary schools that have booked him as a guest performer and the friends and relatives he must awaken to the crisis. When nobody will heed his warning, Randall spirals into despair and self-destruction as he races from one futile visit to the next. At the end of his rope, he lands with a family of newly minted survivalists in rural Texas. There, he meets a woman who might help him transcend his millennial fears and build a new life out of the shards of his old one.
